Jump Starting a Car

You don’t want to be–quite literally–left out in the cold with a dead battery. Our Jeep® service technicians at Sansone Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM are outlining how to jump-start your car so that you can be prepared.

Practice Safety First

It’s important to make sure you can safely jump-start your vehicle. If you don’t feel you are in a safe location, it’s best to call for help.

Get Prepared

If possible, you want to get both vehicles facing each other (and as close as possible). Then, pop your hood and secure it with the hood strut. Get your jumper cables ready and make sure they’re untangled.

Carefully Attach the Jumper Cables

When both vehicles are ready, then it’s time to attach the jumper cables. You need to make sure you attach them in the proper order.

To jump-start your car:

  1. Start by clamping the red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of your battery
  2. Fasten the other red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the booster battery
  3. Attach the black clamp to the negative (-) terminal of the booster battery
  4. Finally, clamp the other black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on your vehicle

Start the Cars

Once the jumper cables are securely attached, it’s time to start the cars. First, start the vehicle that is working, and then start your own. Make sure to leave your vehicle running for a few minutes or take it for a short drive, if possible.
