Electric Car Maintenance

EV Service

If you’ve recently purchased a fully electric vehicle at our dealership, you’re probably curious about what electric car maintenance entails and how it differs when compared to a car with a gas engine. EVs lack many of the complicated parts you’ll find in a combustion vehicle, so the maintenance process is actually quite different. Similarities Between EV and Gas Engine Maintenance

It’s probably easier to start with the similarities when it comes to EV and gas engine maintenance. One maintenance task you’ll still have to keep up with is coolant changes, but instead of replacing the coolant once every one to three years, you can use the same coolant in an electric vehicle for 150,000 miles.

Another task that won’t change is suspension maintenance. This auto part will wear down over time depending on how much you drive and the conditions you drive in, so it doesn’t matter if the vehicle is electric or gas-powered.

How is Electric Car Maintenance Different?

The main additional part that you’ll have to be concerned about with electric vehicles is the battery. These batteries slow down and lose their charge over time, but most electric vehicles come with a battery pack warranty that allows you to replace the battery if it dies out earlier than expected.

Since electric vehicles also come with regenerative braking, you’ll need to maintain your brake system much less frequently. Regenerative braking allows your vehicle to reuse the energy created while braking, which causes the brake pads and rotors to be used less often. You’ll also have to worry about your transmission less often because EV transmission systems are much simpler.
